Shatter

Shatter was a semester-long senior thesis project. We were able to focus on whatever topic inspired us. I chose to focus on the idea of no longer living up to other’s expectations of you. The main aspect of this project was a small pocket-sized journal. This journal focused on the research I conducted about how one can go about letting go of those expectations. It also included my personal journey of going through the process of letting go. Finally, it had a fill-in section for the users to follow along the steps of letting go of expectations. Another aspect of this project was the mini books which I constructed from laser-cut and engraved wood and cut-to-size paper. On the first page of each mini-book, of which there were 25 books, was a commonly held expectation in society. The idea was for users to fill the rest of the book out as if it was a word web. Each page should contain the first thing (word or phrase) that comes to mind to the user after reading the previous page. This would lead to the last page being as far away from the original expectation as possible. The final aspect of the project was the actual plates. Those who came to the exhibition got to write down an expectation that they were trying to live up to on a plate, put on safety goggles, and literally shatter that expectation by throwing the plate in a bin and watching it break into pieces.
